my grandad has leaukmia for 27 years?

Question: hi just last week my grandad was put in hospital because he had shingles on half of his face really badly. then yesterday the doctors was shocked to find out that apparently my grandad has leaukemia since 1979, it was in his medical reports but it was never treated and no one knew about it, hes in good health smoking 10 cigarrets a day, has his wheat a bix every morning and takes iron tablets twice a day for about 20 years. hes 84 years old.
is it possible????????
are the doctors right????
is it some slow leaukemia??????
is it genetic????????
