abscess - general surgeon or plastic surgeon?

Question:
I have an abscess on my cheek and its pretty inflames (size little larger that a nickel). The doctors say that it needs to be drained and I set a appointment with a general surgeon. However I was just told by a freind that I should go to a plastic surgeon as they will use micro stiches and take better care so that there's less scaring.

The problem is that I have to wait for few das before I can get an appointment with a plastic surgeon. Is i worth waiting? Do general surgeons not take as much precaution to ensure minimal scaring?

I'm on antibiotics and the abscess isnt growing / paining much so not sure if waiting for a few more days may worsen things.

Should I go with general surgeon or wait for plastic surgeon?

Answers:
I'd keep the appointment I had if I were you.

Other Answers:
i prefer you wait plastic surgery as a doctor

You should talk to your general surgeon about your concerns and have him recommend a plastic surgeon if necessary. I had one on my back years ago that a general surgeon took care of, theres a pretty nasty scar there that everybody always comments on. If I had known then I would have waited.

i had an abscess in my armpit my family doctor referred me to a great dermatologist. She used a local anesthetic, and i have no scarring. Oh my abscess was about the size of a small lemon-after it healed I had some discoloration-it looked like a bruise-but it went away in no time. Ask your doc for a referral. A dermatologist can also tell you if you are at risk for abscesses on other parts of your body.

either one but since it is on your cheek i would rather see you go to a plastic surgeon or even a dermatologist i had one and have a tiny little scar
