What really works to help you sleep?

Question:
Melantonin, valerian root, passion flower, chamomile tea, warm milk, meditation don't do it for me. Ambien and Lunesta are too expensive and have bad side effects.

Answers:
I have alot of trouble with sleeping at times. This is what I do.
1. Put a heating pad on low under my back and it relaxes me to sleep.
2. Get up and do stretching for every body part for about 30 minutes. This always works.
3. Make hot tea called Tension Tamer Tea by Celestial Seasonings. I use two tea bags, no sugar or honey.
4. Sex works for a release.
5. This is the worst suggestion. Watch TV until you can't stay awake any longer.
6. Pray about what may be bothering me.
I hope these suggestions help.

Research progressive muscle relaxation. I really think this helps. If you find you can't sleep because you are worried, get out of bed, write your worries on paper, and put it in a drawer. As your mind drifts to those worries, tell yourself, "They are written down, I'll deal with them tomorrow." Get in a routine before bed that doesn't involve stimulating activity -- no TV, no computer. Sweet dreams!

Benadryl. (diphenhydramine) $1 for a package at the dollar store.
Don't be fooled by Sominex, Unisom, Tylenol PM .. Blah Blah Blah. it's all diphenhydramine and should cost no more than $1 for about 24-25mg tabs.

Unisom with or without Advil. Makes you drowsy, calms you down, gets rid of any random aches & pains. You don't wake up groggy. Works great for me! i'd never get to sleep without it. I think they just came out with an "Advil PM" which is Advil and diphenhydramine (benadryl), same active ingredient as in Unisom. Or, like the other suggestion, just get some generic Benadryl and try it. Good luck! Stay up. Eventually you'll get tired.

Exercise, exercise, exercise until you really sweat up a storm. Then take a shower, drink a tall glass of water and go to bed. No music playing. No sounds. No lights on. Just dark and quiet. Let your body really relax.

Works for me every time. No drugs, no herbs. Just clean water.

You see, when you put things into your body within two hours of going to bed your system has to process them. If it is processing them while you are trying to sleep you are not really resting. Reduce the processing by exercising, don't eat anything two hours before you go to bed. Then drink that tall glass of water just before you climb into that comfy bed. The water will flush anything out of your system that might cause it to continue processing while you are trying to sleep.
