epidural to remove a kidney stone?

Question:
my daughter is having a operation tomorrow to remove a kidney stone which is very big the doctor wants her to have a epidural she does not want to have one why do they want her to have a epidural

Answers:
An epidural will help her cope both during and after surgery. Having a kidney stone is one of the most painful things to have, so as you can imagine having one removed is no mean feat either. I spent 3 months working on a Urology ward and epidurals were used routinely during surgery. An epidural may be used with or without a general anaesthetic depending on the procedure.

When your daughter wakes up they may set up a PCA device, which stands for Patient Controlled Analgesia. If they do this your daughter will be given a small device to hold which allows her to administer analgesia when she feels the need by pressing a button. The epidural site is used to deleiver this analgesia. This method is very safe as the amount of analgesia given over a certain period is restricted to say every 3 minutes so the patient can not overdose no matter how many times they press the button.

I hope you find this useful and I wish your daughter a speedy recovery.
If I remember correctly yo can feel nothing from the waist down with an epidural.
