There is a blood test to detect the virus, but I have read they can be really inaccurate, providing a negative result when you do have the virus.

I had my initial outbreak about 3 weeks after having sex with someone who had the virus. I went to my OBGYN and she took one look at it and knew it was herpes. They also did a pap smear for me.
