Does your thyroid regulate your blood sugar ?

Question:
I am a type 2 diabetic & used to take synthroid for a low active thyroid but had stopped. In the past month I am having a hard time keeping my diabetes down to a good level, it keeps going over the 200's. I just went back on the synthroid starting today & want to know if anyone has had the same problem or knows anything about this.

Answers:
In addition to the answer above ie that the thyroid hormone generally controls your body metabolism, both diabetes and thyroid problems can be a result of autoimmune problems. It is therefore important to continue with your medication unless your doctors advice otherwise.

New diabetics are often checked to ensure they do not have thyroid problems although this is admittedly more common with type 1 diabetes.

Other Answers:
The throid regulates metabolism and this is the burning of sugar primarily; so you should take your thyroid medication.
Blood glucose is regulated by several different systems. The pancreas and liver are the primary organs but the bloodstream, stomach, intestines are also involved because of digestion.
You should keep taking your thyroid meds no matter what. My Diabetes Doctor gets mad at me cuz I don't take my thyroid meds, I forget to take them. You gain wieght if you don't take your thyroid medicine. That's one reason why my dr gets mad at me plus your thyroid secretes hormones necessary for growth and proper metabolism.
