what is a-fib and is it fatal or can you get blood clots?

Question:

Answers:
It is atrial fibrillation.
Aka your atria in your heart do not beat correctly with your ventricles.
Usually at a rate about 150 beats per minute.
Yes it is very fatal if not controlled as it causes blood clots to travel to the brain and cause strokes.

Other Answers:
Both can result from a-fib. What happens is this: normally the heart beat is synchronized with the nerve impulse going to the atrium first, then the ventricle. The atria are the top two chambers, where blood enters the heart. When they contract they force blood into the ventricles. Normally the beat is synchronized & rhythmical, like the "lub-dub" you hear when you listen to your heart beat (lub=atrial contr., dub=ventricular contr). With atrial fib the rhythm is disturbed, causing the artria to beat faster than the ventricles. When this happens the beats are not as strong or effective, causing inadequate emptying of the atrial chamber. And anytime blood is allowed to pool or stagnate, so to speak, clots form. Those can be picked up by the circulation moving through the heart and end up in the heart muscle (a heart attack), the brain (a stroke), the lung (pulmonary embolus) or other areas. Many people have atrial fib & may not be aware - it's usually picked up by the doctor. Once diagnosed there are medicines that can help, and they usually have to be on blood thinners to prevent clot formation.
