Tumor, Cancer & Neoplasia?

Question:
So a malignant tumor is cancerous, right? I know that Neoplasia is cetainly similar to a tumor but is there a difference, or is it the same thing?

Answers:
Neoplasia is a term that relates to how different from normal cells a mass is. Under the microscope the cells appear different from the normal cells around them, prompting someone to term them "new cells" or "new changes"= neoplasia.

Thus any mass which shows cellular differences is "neoplastic", but may not be dangerous; that is show a tendency to invade surrounding tissues or spread to other places(metastasize).

Other Answers:
A tumor is any abnormal mass. It could be a benign cyst. A neoplasm is a new growth and refers to an abnormal growth benign or malignant. If it is malignant, and is from cells of the ectoderm or entoderm it is cancer. Mesoderm-sarcoma. For example uterine fibroids are benign neoplastic tumors.
