are there any side effects and pain after a barium anenema?

Question:
is it normal to feel severe pain & discomfort after a barium anenema ? if so how long should the discomfort last?

Answers:
if they used gas to inflate your intestinal tract the pain/discomfort will go after you pass the gas! If pain is severe call doctors office and describe to them see if they can help.

Other Answers:
It's the air that's hurting.

It'll go soon, and when it does, hold on to something because you're likely to take off.

I timed my second fart at 12 seconds. Also, the barium doesn't flush and sits in the bottom of the toilet for ages.

Good luck with everything.
ive never personally had one but my father had colon cancer and more barium tests than any person shud have to deal with, i think the pain and burning is normal i mean come on think of what they did dduring that test, he said as he had more and more hepretty much lost all feeling anyways.
My friend had one a couple of months ago and she semed fine after. All the best
shouldn't last long........your worst problem is getting the 'after effects' to flush down the loo afterwards.........usually need a bucket of water as well as flushing
It lasts for a couple hours after the procedure. Initially its not too bad but an hour or so latter you can get severe wind pains and these go on until all the gas they have pumped into you has been passed. The thing is not to worry because although for some it can be painful, others have no trouble at all.
Barium enema does not cause pain, it may cause just heaviness in abdomen, which is usually relieved after defecating. you know barium is metallic and is heavy, that is the reason.
Just a lot of gas. Just make sure you take a gentle laxative or something otherwise the barium is difficult to pass and you will end up constipated.
