Do you know anything more about predisposition to diabetes?
Question:
I do not really understand diabetes and how insulin works. Info on that would be helpful as well.
Answers:
Hyperinsulinemia is a marker of Insulin Resistance, which can be considered as a state of predisposition to Diabetes Mellitus. But, I don't think starting Metformin is necessary as a precaution. The most common cause of Insulin Resistance is Obesity.
If you are obese, bring down your weight near normal by diet and exercise with the help of a diabetologist and dietitian. If you have a family history of Diabetes, you have more chances of progressing towards the disease from the current stage of Hyperinsulinemia.
Before starting Metformin, I would advise you to undergo an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. Based on the report, you can decide on your further plan of action. I am ready to help if you need it.
Other Answers:
My aunt has it badly, if they get it under control now you may not have to take the insulin shots, and just the pills. It sounds like your body is not always make the right about of insulin, but it not totally stop making it either. If i was you, I would get a second opinion on it.
Please see the webpage for more details on Hyperinsulinemia.
