Anyone had the tdap vaccination? (tetanus, diptheria & pertussis)?

Question:

I had the vaccination a week ago, and although the soreness and stiffness typical of vaccines has gone away, I have a hard lump under my skin at the injection site. Has anyone else experienced this? I've never had it before with the plain tetanus vaccination. Thanks for your input.

(Mostly) painless hard lumps at DTaP injection sites are usually the result of some of the vaccine and adjuvant leaking from the muscle into the subcutaneous tissue where it sets up a reaction. It is seldom an infection or abscess, and it happens less if care is taken to make sure the needle is deep in the muscle, but sometimes it just cant be avoided. Its harmless and it passes. If they were trying to be nice to you using a short needle, make sure next time they use at least 5/8 inch for a shot in the arm, 1 inch if you have a lot of subcutaneous tissue.

I am a pediatric nurse, I have seen several teens and children with this complaint, not just with tdap. I believe it can last up to a month sometimes but usually goes away within a couple of weeks. If it doesn't you need to contact the Dr. who gave you the immunization.

Good for you, getting the shot helps protect everyone Pertussis is very contagious and can be deadly to infants which is why the CDC recently began reccomeding Pertussis boosters for all adults and adolscents.

I know my family and I will gladly accept the booster, its much better than the alternative. I hope the soreness goes away for you soon I know otc tylenol is supposed to help I think my dh's was only sore for a day or so.

Yeah the tetanus shot

Yes it is possible due to aluminium phosphate used as an adjuvant in the vaccine. It will resolve finally.It does not occur with tetanus toxoid (plain) if no adjuvant is used.Some times it may even be due to faulty technique causing haematoma(leaking of blood from vessels during injection). Usually, it gets smaller over time and finally gets resolved.
