Answers:
Streptolysin-O is a bacterial surface antigen.
If exposed to streptococcal bacteraemia (blood borne infection, often following a primary throat infection) then you form antibodies to it. These are measurable as anti-streptolysin antibodies (ASO antibodies).
The unit of measurement is based on a diltutional sample of antigen exposed to your blood before a reaction is no longer ellicited. This is the antibody titre.
Hence the lower the antibody titre the stronger your immune response to the antigen (eg a titre of 1:500 dilutions is less strong a response than someone whose serum still reacts at a titre of 1:1000).
In short, it confirms you have been exposed to streptococcal bacteraemia.
Why is that important?
It can lead to development of rheumatic fever during the acute infection (requires antibiotic treatment) but that is best avoided because it can have late sequellae such as heart valve vegitations.
