How do you get rid of "prickly heat"?

Question:

Answers:
Sorry but powder won't get rid of it. It will help with the sweaty situation from which the rash arose but, if it contains talc it will worsen it as talc is abrasive. The fastest way to get rid of the rash is to apply either Noxzema (or a store brand) or a mentholated chest rub - your choice depending on whether you want to deal with the petroleum in the chest rubs. I have used both and found them equally effective. To keep it from coming back, use corn starch rather than a talc based powder. It's not abrasive , it's considerably cheaper and has no scent to compete with whatever fragrance you may want to use.

Prickly heat is the same thing as heat rash-- just an itchy rash that comes about because the sweat glands secrete faster than the pores can drain them. It has to do with excessive humidity as well as high temperature and will occur on those parts of the body that do not get air-dried very well. That includes the neck, arm pits, groin areas and other sites that are more heavily clothed and where skin surfaces come together (thighs, breasts and buttocks).

When sweating is extreme, the pinheads will become blister-like and may resemble small chicken pox eruptions.you may notice a worsening of the condition under the summer's hot and humid tomes.

Heat rashes sometimes can be prevented by the use of fans and air conditioning and by avoiding the prolonged contact of sweaty clothes on the skin and skin on skin.

Once the eruptions develop, these points are important. It may also be helpful to use a drying-type lotion such as calamine or Caladryl. For discomfort, use acetaminophen and not aspirin. For itching, Benadryl® may help.

When the condition is severe, you may need a little prescription help from the doctor just as you sometimes do in the case of second-degree sunburn.
