Does Minocycline cause a false negative in strep tests?

Question:
I have been on minocycline for acne for about 4 months and im pretty sure that it causes false negatives on strep tests because I took two strep tests with my last illness and the first one came back 24 hrs. later and it was negative but the second one came back 24 hrs. later positive. Some doctors think it does and some think it doesnt. What is the truth?

Answers:
Minocycline, like any antibiotic, kills bacteria. If you got a negative strep test back, it just means that the lab was unable to culture any streptococcus organisms in vitro. Minocycline is not used to treat strep throat but could cause a reduction in the amount present. This could be affecting the swab or it may have to due with the lab's practices. There is no definite way to say whether minocycline was the result of your mixed results because there could be several different reasons why the lab was unable to culture any streptococcus.

Other Answers:
no the minocycline does not cause negative strep tests, the first one came back negative because there wasnt enough bacteria in the first sample to grow for the test to read it
