what caused me to get hives ?

The number one culprit for hives is usually an allergic reaction. Keep tabs on what happens to you in certain environments -- ie, do you start to itch, do your hives get worse, etc.
Also stress can aggravate a breakout, so try to keep your stress levels to a minimum.
Until you figure out the cause of your hives, you'll probably be stuck on a sort of medicine tread-mill, but you can alleviate some of the pain.
Don't do anything that will dry out your skin, as that will only cause further irritation -- use very light and hypoallergenic body wash when you shower, and try not to let your shampoo drip down onto your skin when you wash your hair, as shampoo strips away skin's natural lubricants.
If you use a moisturizer, use something very gentle as well -- no fragrances or anything heavy..but I would recommend staying away from a moisturizer altogether.
An oatmeal bath is a tried and true remedy, but be careful -- too many baths can dry out the skin, and a bath that is too hot will also suck the moisture out of your skin.
Also try taking an anti-inflammatory like aspirin or ibuprofen (advil) daily (a small dose one to three times throughout the day) to help the swelling of your skin go down.
Of course, the best answer is to keep tabs on your daily activity to find out what's causing these buggers -- you may also want to get an allergy test from your doctor, although if s/he tests you for something and it's what is causing your hives, it may result in another breakout.
Good luck!!

Usually if somthing causes hives it is something that you have changed in your life. I have started using the clear soaps that don't have the perfumes and strong cleansers in them and only lotions that are allergenic. Don't use strong detergents either or softeners. They are the worst if you have a rash.
It means that you are seriously allergic to the medicine and that you need to stop now and go to the hospital! Hives can swell up your throat and make breathing difficult. Go now! now are you saying the medicine gave you hives or you hate taking medication for your hives. more information please.
Need more clarification, and more information. How long have you had hives? What seems to bring them on or cause them worsen? The more you tell us, the more likely you will receive an intelligent and helpful answer.
Acute urticaria, which are hives lasting less than 6 weeks, are usually due to either a food or drug allergy, or in some cases can be caused by viral or bacterial infection. Chronic urticaria, which is hives lasting longer than 6 weeks, is seldom due to allergies. Most CU patients are autoimmune, which means their own immune systems are attacking them, in this case resulting in constant hiving. Some CU patients have an occult (hidden) chronic infection, such as sinus or dental infection. Still others have a problem with their mast cells - either something called mast cell activation disorder/syndrome, or they have a rare disease called mastocytosis.
Depending on whether your hives are acute or chronic, and what the cause is, determines the treatment options.
Which side effects of which medications did you not like? If the drowsiness of typical antihistamines is what bothers you, some of the newer ones (such Zyrtec, Allegra, and Claritin) tend to cause less drowsiness for most people.
