Many of my patients have it. I sympathize with you. I suggest everyone donate to the Alzheimer foundation for research. And reconsider the stem cell research.
Other Answers:
I'm sorry you had to suffer seeing your grandma go downhill for 10 years before she died. I'm a nurse who takes care of old people, so I know many folks with Alzheimers. Yes, I agree with you, it's a terrible disease.
Yes, my sisters and I lost our mom to Alzheimer's. It took quite awhile for us to recognise it, and several more years for it to claim her life. It's a heartwrenching disease. My heart goes out to you.
I have worked with people with the dreaded disease for the last 14 years and i agree with you, i find it really hard to watch people slip into the abyss of forgetfulness, not remembering how eat or how to use the bathroom or worst of all forgetting family or even ones self.
My Grandpa was diagnosed with it a year ago and his mother had it too. It's a cruel disease.
I am sorry about the loss of ur grandma. Yes you are absolutley right it is the worst way to see someone you love perish... I know personally b/c my grandma has alzhiemer's and it is so hard sometimes to watch her and care for her...but anyways I will pray for you and your family and the grief and heartbreak they are feeling ...
i do research in this field and it looks good. it's hard to watch someone you love go through it and i've seen it. your grandmother hit the upper average for living with altzheimers. you need to know that there is a heavy genetic linker so your parents and your risks just jumped considerably. It starts effectign the brain around 10-15 years before it's detectable. They're coming up with a better way to test for it, but for now spinal tap is all they can do and that just confirms a diagnosis...
So sorry for your loss. There's a lesson there for all of us to spend more time with our grandparents while they are with us. There's actually some really dramatic developments in treating Alzheimers as well as Parkinsons and Huntingtons, most all neurodegenerative diseases.
