Help me find HIV+ statistics -- mortality rate, treatment, education, etc.?

Question:
I am helping a friend (social work student) write a paper on why HIV+ people in the US are living longer. He is trying to determine why people live longer -- is it because of higher HIV education... is it because of treatment options... is it because of support services available to help patients. Please, I am not looking for short answers (unless you are sending me a link to a web-page), but if you believe one of these is MORE the reason than others please explain why.
I really do not know much about HIV/AIDS treatment etc. so any help is appreciated.
(Oh, and this is not a gay/lesbian thing, it is just simply an HIV thing. so I would appreciate people keeping anti-gay comments to themselves)

Answers:
There are many treatment options available today to help HIV+ ppl live longer; they are not a cure. For example, if a mother is pregnant and she is +, they can give her treatments so she does not pass it to the fetus.
