Reason for ketones in urine besides starvation?

Question:
I just went to the doctors because I was losing weight even though I have been eating plenty (after I realized I was losing weight I ate even more than normal). There was ketones in my urine, and while I think I know what they are I do not know what reason that would happen if I am not starving myself. If anyone knows what could possibly be wrong, it would be very helpful. My lab work wont be back until next week and I am going crazy trying to figure out what could be wrong. My bp is also 163/90 which is very high I know. It has been relatively high for several years now but has recently peaked to that. I am a healthy 19 year old. I weigh 120 lbs and am 5'5". Any help is much appriciated.

Answers:
My first recommendation is that you drink plenty of fluid. Weight loss and high ketones could indicate severe dehydration, which can be life-threatening.

The sudden unexplained weight loss could be caused by diabetes.

Your lab work should provide the answers. Your doctor probably ordered diabetic tests for blood sugar and hemoglobin a1c, and a lipid panel to check for problems with triglycerides and cholesterol.

Just be patient (no pun intended), and ask her for a copy of your lab results. You should keep a record of all your lab results for future comparisons.

Here is some information from Wikipedia about ketosis:

I have heard that eating too much protein can cause ketones in your urine. People on the Adkins Diet sometimes get it.
