I've had it 3 times in my life and it is the worst pain in your throat that one can ever experience. The BEST thing you can do right now is to gargle some very warm water with salt in it so that it can destroy the bacteria that is lingering in the back of your throat. Trust me, you will feel better by the end of the day if not sooner.
DRINK PLENTY OF COOL LIQUIDS TO KIND OF NUMB THE THROAT. MY DOCTOR GAVE ME A SPECIAL MOUTHWASH TO NUMB THE PAIN UNTIL THE ANTIBIOTICS KICKED IN. I JUST CAN'T REMEMBER THE NAME OF IT.
Gargle salt water and take a pain killer. Or use throat sprays, Cepacol makes a spray that numbs the back of your throat and the red kind doesn't taste too bad.
Penicillin is not a pain reliever, it is an antibiotic. The antibiotics will stop the problem, but you'll still have the pain on top of that until they finish their job, unless you take something over-the-counter like ibuprofen or some sort of medicine that specifically targets throat pain. Just go to the store and look through the medicine area until you find something for strep pain.
Cloraseptic throat spray. Available at any pharmacy in the cold medicine aisle. It numbs your throat on contact.
Hope you feel better soon.
