Can you have a baby when you have Tachycardia?

Question:
My husband and I have been talking about having a baby for sometime now and we are really, really want to. However, I have tachycardia (a racing heart) and was wondering if anyone has heard of mothers who are giving birth have had complications or died from the rapid increase in heart rate.
We are going to speak with a doctor soon, but I was just wondering if anyone has had or known of any real life experiences.
So does anyone know if it is ok to have a baby when you have tachycardia?

~Dd

Answers:
It depends on the type of tachycardia you have and the reason for it. Most people with arrhythmias can have kids; it is mainly folks with certain types of congenital heart diseases resulting in pulmonary hypertension or very narrowed valves that should not have kids. I will say, however, that the hormones of pregnancy frequently worsen arrhythmias, so discuss this with your doctor ahead of time. Generally, the tachycardias can be easily controlled with medications (such as beta blockers) that cause little or no risk to the baby. Get a full physical, stop any unhealthy behaviors, start exercising, and discuss these issues prior to conceiving. Good luck.

hey-it depends on the out lying reason for your tach-if you have a more serious heart problem the best thing to do is to get checked out by a cardiologist. If you just have tach occasionally-chances are you can have a normal pregnancy with medication and under a doctors supervision. Don't give up medical science can do wonder these days. women with very serious heart diseases are giving birth to healthy babies everyday. Just see the doctor and good luck to you.
Talk to your doctor about it. If you go ahead, you are classified as a "high risk" pregnancy and need to get into the right program at the hospital which will accept you.
yep
Hi, I have sinustachycardia (abnormal fast heart beat) and i take a beatta blocker for it its called troporol xl. I have had this condition since i was 20. I am now 24 and am getting married next summer. We want to have kids but i can barely handle excersing for more than 10 minutes. I am afraid that i wont be able to handle birth do you feel the same? I think that we will be fine but may need to be given a c-section or have oxygen hooked up
Yes, I'm sure that you'll be fine-- I don't think that an increased pulse will have any effect on your baby or yourself. However, this is a question for a doctor.
