Why are diabetics only supposed to have 3 portions of fruit & veg a day?
Question:
Answers:
The american diabetic association say you should have the same number of fruits and vegtables as the rest of the world. 5

While fruit does have a lot of fiber (which is good for diabetics) they have TONS of carbs (which are bad for diabetics).
Root veggies (carrots, parsinps, etc...) have a lot of carbs in them too.
You should consult your medical professional before following any advice that you find on any websites.
fruits contain alot of natural sugar .
i dont know who told you that but fresh fruit and veggies is ok to have 3-5 servings unless the fruit is in sugar and the veggies are canned and high in salt
you can overdo the sugar in fruit..........with vegies...peas..beans..corn...a... starchy and are converted into sugar............................ your dr. to be sure and ask about the vitamines....
Veggies contain carbs that are converted to sugar by the body. Most fruits contain lots of natural sugars
I don't think that is entirely true. Especially about vegetables. Recheck your source. I just know they need to coordinate their meds with meals and exercises. And to avoid consuming simple sugars because they increase their blood sugar quickly.
not sure as i havent heard this at all. do u think its because fruit has a lot of sugar in it (yep it has, especially grapes)
go and talk to your gp and then he can put u in touch with the dietician it will probably be a waiting list.
i dont think you should change anything until u see the dietician, you need professional advice before u do anything.
don't cut them down, just link them with a food high in protein instead, ie nuts, fish, chicken, dairy products, etc. This way, you won't have the high insulin/glucose peaks after eating, just gentle peaks instead!
I do not believe that is true. the most important thing is to realize that different fruits and "vegs" are considered differently in nutritional terms. I put vegs in quotes because potatoes, corn, peas, even carrots are not vegs when it comes to carb content, and that is the consideration with diabetics, esp. type 1 DM. Also, portion control is very important! if you have never seen a certified diabetes educator, doing so would be very helpful to you! also, check out the American Diabetes Assoc. website. (www.diabetes.org) for some good info and as a resource for books.
never heard that on. Most doctors sy fruit and veg can be eaten freely. But you must not add sauces, sugar, butter etc. Boil, steam, or bake them. Or eat raw. Check with your doctor.
they have way too many carbs try blueberries and whole grains it will make the difference. stay away from potatoes and bananas you can eat them but do it sparingly
i have type 2 and am on tablets and i was told by the diabetic clinic to only have 3 portions of fruit and veg a day by the way I'm in the UK but then every one is different and should go by what there Dr says
