yes that happens to me too. i have asthma as well. it is because of lack of oxygen, and that is our body's way of compensation. when that happens that is a signal to stop, take a few [10-12] slow deep breaths while sitting to re up your oxygen. if this doesn't clear up you might want to see your doctor. my asthma cleared up considerably when i began a course of treatment at the chiropractor.

I do but I contribute it to the fact that one of the meds I take makes me sleepy. Most of them, the inhalor(albuterol) and Advair, actually speed me up, singulair the pill makes me sleepy. Dont ask me why. I dont know, wish i did. Could this be the situation with you?
don't feel bad. when you're having an asthma attack, airways are constricted so you are having a difficult time breathing. the reason why you are yawning is because your body tells you to "take a deep breath" -- that is as big as a yawn. it's trying to expand your lungs to its maximum capacity.
when patients in the hospital don't take deep breaths, especially after surgery -- their alveoli (air sacs in the lungs) closes up. that's why it is part of my job description to help patients do some therapy in order to encourage them to take deep breaths. we use a device called incentive spirometer.
i know that's the effect of yawning.
one reason that my mother has explained to me when i was young (although i've never heard of it in school -- but it could be true) is that when the brain lacks oxygen, we yawn to take in more air to supply to the brain. reason why i posted it is because it sounds true. ever wonder why we yawn whenever we are tired? by night time we usually have used up a lot of energy and oxygen and our bodies are trying to replenish those.
i should have asked my professor about that. it does sound true.
