Hyaline membrane disease is another name for surfactant deficiency. Surfactant is the substance in the lungs which causes alveoli to open, so that air can get in. Babies born prematurely, before 34 weeks of gestation may have surfactant deficiency, leading to respiratory distress after birth. They are given artificial or bovine surfactant.
