Can high blood pressure pills cause your heart to race spontaniously?

Question: My mom and grandmother both have had "attacks" where their heart would start racing while they were at rest. It resolved after a few minutes. My mom's doctor said it was probably due to stress. I asked her if she had caffeine before the attack, but she couldn't remember. The only med that they are both on is high blood pressure pills. Any one else have this problem?

High blood pressure pills lower your pressure, relieving strain on your heart. It would be a good idea to check their blood pressures when they have these "attacks" and see if their blood pressures are too low! The heart speeds up with a sudden drop in blood pressure to try to raise it. It's an internal/automatic response. They may also be experiencing "arrythmias" like PAT/SVT/Afib/Aflutter. These can develop in response to poorly controlled blood pressure and strain on the heart as well as normal aging and coronary narrowing. Stress is always something to consider but only after true disease states have been eliminated as the source. It's very easy to dismiss everything as stress, then patients are coming in to the hospitals with heart attacks, strokes, and potentially lethal cardiac arrythmias. I would get your relatives into see a cardiologist.

Oh dear, that sucks. Why would you go and swallow pills that do such horrible things to your body? Perhaps your olds would be better off doing some gentle exercise, drinking plenty (2 litres a day) of water to thin the blood, and generally changing her unhelpful habits to get over the blood pressure problem. Drugs are OK to temporarily fix symptoms but to really fix the problem you need to go natural.
