I have atopic dermatitis, the clinical name for eczema. I've had it for 40+ years. You just need to avoid things that irritate the skin.Don't do anything that is drying to the skin:avoid soap and use soap substitutes like Cetaphil Cleanser.Avoid lanolin which is highly irritating to the skin.Avoid AHA acids, sugar acids, peeling agents, unless your dermatologist is having you use these as part of your treatment and is closely supervising you.Avoid petrolatum(Vaseline) which doesn't allow the pores to breathe, causing the itch factor.Scratching is to be avoided;it's irritating to the skin and can cause the redness and rash to start.Avoid extremes in temperature(perspiration can cause rashes;clothing should be all-natural cottons or soft fabrics that allow perspiration to evaporate away from the skin. And if you wear wool,it must be lined; only soft fabrics are to be worn near the skin. Sheets need to be soft, too!Moisturize the skin whenever it feels dry, using unscented products like Cetaphil,Moisturel,Eucerin. This means that you will be applying lotion to your hands whenever you wash them or elsewhere on the body whenever you are feeling dry and itchy.Unscented products is the way to go for everything you use, even clothing detergents and softeners.Use gloves to do wet work.Use fabric gloves to do dry, dusty work.
But keep this in mind, sometimes eczema happens for no reason at all.You take care of your skin, but you get a rash anyway! All you can do is take care of yourself and not fret too much about it and other things in general.Keeping emotions on an even, calm keel is also recommended to eczema patients;emotions can play a role in making it harder to heal for some reason.

I am not a doctor so nothing I say here is written in stone, but I have 2 kids with eczema and this is what I have found works best to keep break outs to a min. Unscented soap and shampoo, I know almost everything has some kind of perfume in it but Ivory now has an unscented body soap and you can find unscented shampoos and conditioners at hair salons and organic shops. Laundry soap with no perfume and always use a liquid soap and it rinses out better than a powder. I find Purex works really well at getting things clean and doesn't annoy the skin. Stay away from fabrics where the skin can't breath. Stick with cottons and silks etc. Any clothing that constantly rubs also seems to affect the skin. When they do get an outbreak, if trying to stay away from expensive perscriptions, I have found if I put Penaten Cream on the affected area at night it is mostly gone by morning. Good luck, but you may want to consult a doctor for the best info.
I never knew what eczema was until I had it last year. I've had it on and off since. I did a little research and found that (in Asian philosophy) eczema is considered to be a manifestation of phsychological unease. In other words, it is the symptom of a deeper problem.
I've been focusing on my emotional/mental issues: stress from work, relationships, other responsibilities. The eczema is presently at bay.
