You didn't say 5mg of what :) Antihistamines like Benedryl or Claritin or Allegra are not a problem long term. All they do is gather up the histamines your body is overproducing because of your allergies. Basically they're making you healthier because your body is over-reacting. Decongestants long term are not good. but antihistamines are fine.
I take an o/c antihistamine often 3 times a day. I have done this for some 30 years with no real side affects. I alternate between Diphenhydramine HCI {Benadryl} and Chlorpheniramine Maleate {Chloratrimeton} Walmart brands, usually. Use one until your system builds up an immunity and switch to the other. Some people get drowsey when taking Benadryl. Try taking half the reccommended dosage. It's worked for me and I'm allergic to nearly everything , grass, trees, pollen,{ ragweed, cedar} and even cats. Good luck!
If I take an antihistamine for a long time, it quits working. I have to switch types for a while.
