Answers:
my dad has gluten intolerance...not a fun thing to have!
the best way is to go to your doctor, let him/her know the symptoms you're experiencing, and they can test u for it.
symptoms might include: cramping, loose gray oily stools (that apparently float to the top of the toilet cuz of the fat content), malnutrition (d/t the damage in your small intestine)...
gluten free diets are pretty strict. there is gluten in ALOT of things you don't even know about...it's not just wheat products...it's in preservatives, additives, etc.... AND it's a very expensive diet!!!!! But obviously better than the alternative which is paying for a regular diet and then suffering the consequences.
It is hereditary, so if a family member has it, it's a good idea to get checked out if you are experiencing symptoms.
I am not sure how long after starting the diet your symptoms will improve...but I believe a couple days you'd start to notice SOMETHING...your body needs that couple days to get it out of your system and start healing.
In my oppinion, gluten free diets are probably better for MOST people...we're not really meant to digest that protein.
hope that helps

Other Answers:
1) Gold standard test is ''endoscopic small bowel biopsy''.
serum anti-gliadin [IgA] & anti- endomysial Ab can b detected
in untreated patient.
2) The food u should avoids are those containing wheat, rye,
barley and oats.
Rice, maize and potatoes are satisfactory source of complex
carbohydrate for gluten intolerance person.
3)I don't know the exact time but life long gluten free diet is
necessary and complication is less common in those who
strictly adhere to a gluten free diet.
Just go to Celiac.com it will answer all of your questions...
