They are doing as much as the research money will stretch to do. Have been for very, very, long time now! It is just a very complex disease that depends on the individual so much that the advances are slow, because testing is so radical in its results.
And what might help you and me, might kill someone else.
If you are referring to Type II Diabetes Mellitus (adult onset diabetes). there is a cure: Weight loss from diet and exercise. The key is strict glycemic (blood sugar) control. Drugs like glipizide, metformin, actos, etc. may help control blood sugar, but in the end it is up to the person to change their lifestyle.
The medicine is there in the market but very few know that it cures diabetes. The medicines is very effective and result oriented. To get rid of diabetes, it is most important for sufferers to correct dietary habits. Without this, it will never ever be possible to get rid of the disease.

There is currently no cure for diabetes. Diet, exercise, and careful monitoring of blood glucose levels are the keys to manage diabetes so that patients can live a relatively normal life. Diabetes can be life-threatening if not properly managed, so patients should not attempt to treat this condition without medical supervision. Treatment of diabetes focuses on two goals: keeping blood glucose within normal range and preventing the development of long-term complications. Alternative treatments cannot replace the need for insulin but they may enhance insulin’s effectiveness and may lower blood glucose levels. In addition, alternative medicines may help to treat complications of the disease and improve quality of life.
Stem cell research would be a promising avenue of research for curing Type I diabetes; however, in the US, our Christian fundamentalist government is doing everything it possibly can to stand in the way of such research. Welcome to the new Dark Ages.
I'm sure there is a cure but it's all about the all mighty dollar !
doctors,researchers ,drug makers all would be unemployed.

Not yet.but several approaches to "cure" diabetes are being pursued:
* Pancreas transplantation
* Islet cell transplantation (islet cells produce insulin)
* Artificial pancreas development
* Genetic manipulation (fat or muscle cells that don't normally make insulin have a human insulin gene inserted & then these "pseudo" islet cells are transplanted into people with type 1 diabetes)
* A gene therapy developed by researchers at Baylor College of Medicine has apparently cured diabetes in mice by inducing cells in the liver to become beta cells that produce insulin and three other hormones
