Doc8 - I do not know what Marfans Syndrome is.?
Question:
Answers:
Marfan's syndrome is an inherited (genetic) condition with a combination of characteristics - mostly in tall people - a layman's definition is that they do not have as much elastic that makes up the lining of their arteries so they can get stretched out in areas where there is a lot of pressure - like the aorta right next to the heart. If this is not watched for problems it could rupture and lead to fatal hemorrhage. This weak artery problem also causes some problems in the eyes.
You may have heard of basketball players dying from heart problems - in the old days some of them may have had this problem.

Marfan syndrome is an inherited connective tissue disorder transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait. It is noteworthy for its worldwide distribution, relatively high prevalence, clinical variability, and pleiotropic manifestations, some of which are life threatening. The disorder results from molecular defects in the fibrillin gene that are responsible for the impaired structural integrity of the skeletal, ocular, and cardiovascular systems. Cardinal features of the disorder include tall stature, ectopia lentis, mitral-valve prolapse, aortic-root dilatation, and aortic dissection. About three quarters of patients have an affected parent; new mutations account for the remainder. Marfan syndrome is fully penetrant with marked interfamilial and intrafamilial variability.
