What does it mean when white spots appear on your skin when exposed to cold air or water?

Question:
When my daughter is exposed to cold air or water she breaks out in white hive-like spots. They disappear when her skin gets warm.I was just wondering if this is some kind of allergic reaction to the cold.

Answers:
That is called cold-induced urticaria. Her body is reacting to the cold. She needs to be bundled up well this winter, never go swimming alone and enter the water slowly. Sometimes a daily antihistamine like Claritin or Zyrtec can help- ask your doctor. Typically, these will go away, sometimes it takes a year ot two.
