Did I have a TIA? (Transient Ischemic Attack) What should I do?

Question:
Two weeks ago, as I was shopping with my father, I felt a tingling in my right hand which quickly spread up my whole arm, sort of like I had just woken up from sleeping on it. I felt the same kind of feeling in the extreme right side of my face (cheek and ear?) after a minute. I didn't think much of it, especially since it went away after about two minutes. Then I went to converse with my father, and I couldnt form words correctly! All I could do was mumble a little, it was the wierdest feeling I've ever had. But, like the tingling, it went away after like five minutes. Then about a half hour later I developed a headache which lasted the rest of the day. I've been pretty worried about it ever since, I thought it was a stroke or something but then i stumbled across this TIA stuff on the web. I'm an 18 year old male who is at slight risk for diabetes (grandparents), slightly overweight (~15 lbs), doesn't drink much (average college student), eats pretty well, and exercises pretty well.

Answers:
Sounds like a TIA to me but it could also be a migraine variant. Only a full evaluation by a doctor will help rule that out.

I have been having TIAs since you age that were dismissed as migraines until they realized I had 3 clotting problems. APS, Lp(a) and MTHFR. It was a good thing I listened to myself and started taking a baby aspirin. Not saying that is what you should do, that is what I did.

Next time it happens, please call 9-1-1 or have some call for you. That way it is documented while it is happening.

Those are the signs of having a TIA, you best go see the doctor to get checked..
Listen, the same thing happened to me when I was pregnant. almost exactly! My arm was numb, I couldn't think of words, my vision was blurry, etc. My internist ordered a doplar of my carotid arteries, which were clear. I was diagnosed with an optic migraine. It was very scary, but at your age I bet that's what it was. Go to your doctor and have a doplar done just to be on the safe side.
You certainly had some TIA symptoms. You should see your doctor right away so some tests can be done. A TIA can be a warning sign that a stroke is imminent.
Yes definitely go see a doctor. Don't think you are too young to have problems. Your symptoms could be the start of something that could be more serious. They can do lab tests, or an echo on you. You may be prone to blood clots. Please see a doctor.
You should see your doctor....what you describing sounds like it could be something..............your a little young to have TIAs but you shoudl still be checked out.

Most likely it was not a TIA unless you have health problems that affect your bloods clotting or are on Coumadin (Warfarin) or any other anticoagulants(blood thinners) because you have valvular replacement or any other reason and have not been taking the medication. With that said you should still call your doctor tonight and if it happens again call 911 and go to the ER more than likely it will be nothing but better safe than sorry. I had a TIA and the symptoms were similar but the reason I had the TIA was because I did not take my Coumadin for six months and have a mechanical aortic valve.
