after discontinuing fentanyl patches(gradually), is pain in legs and arms normal?
Question:
Answers:
Yes, Fentanyl is a VERY strong opiate and even after gradually reducing the dose the patient will go through withdrawals. They can include flu-like symptoms (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting) runny nose, sneezing and terrible feelings in your arms and legs that feels like something is crawling under the skin and you can't stay still. That is coming from the person's nerves-when a person withdraws from that medication, the nerve endings are crying out for more. It will be better after about 72 hours of being off the Fentanyl completely. Have the patient talk to their doctor about some medications that will make the process more comfortable (like a Clonodine patch.)
Hi there.
You didn't mention what you were using the pain patches for so it is more difficult to answer your question.
If it was for a spinal or neuropathic pain, then it's not unusual for the nerve receptors to sense pain that was there but numbed by the opiod in the patches.
See your doctor and explain the situation.
Good luck.
Yes, you can get rebound effects after weaning from a long-term pain control method like fentanyl. You don't describe why you were taking them, but I know the only prescribed indication for them is chronic pain. Perhaps your other pain meds need adjustment. See your doctor.
