What's the name of the health care professional that deals with veneral diseases?

Question:
Specifically, which kind of doctor performs tests checking for sexually transmitted diseases?

Answers:
Basically any doctor can take off samples to test for STD's. The tests are normally performed at a microbiology lab. I'm a Biomedical Scientist and I perform tests on patients samples to determine if they have STD's. Microbiology labs perform these tests on GP samples, family planning, GUM clinics.

Doctors involved primarily in STD testing normally work for the GUM (Genito - Urinary Medicine) clinics or sexual health clinics.
infectious disease specialist is the specialist for infections, simple STD's can be diagnosed and treated by primary care docs too, good luck
