Bedwetting & ADHD: is there a connection?
Question:
As a young kid, I used to wet the bed at night long after I should've stopped. From what I've read about boys vs. girls and bed-wetting, girls are much less likely to have this than boys, yet I had it! :(
However, my research has also shown that kids with ADHD (boys or girls) are much more likely to suffer from bed-wetting than kids who do NOT have ADHD. I guess I must've "flown under the radar" as a schoolgirl because my ADHD was never diagnosed until age 33. But in retrospect, I can "see" several behavioral red flags existed.
And now bed-wetting too! This would further prove that my psychologist's (and my own) diagnosis is correct. Did any of you have this problem as kids, and learn you have ADHD? Or do your ADHD kids have this problem now?
Answers:
I have a son, who is ADHD, yes bedwetting, sleepwalking, and basically most non-"conforming" bedtime issues are linked somehow to kids with ADHD.
My son bed wet until he was 5, and he still sleepwalks when he has a bad night's sleep. (worried over something, had a bad day, etc). He's 9 now.
But we found by treating his allergies naturally, that he's sleepwalking episodes were cut back, because he was able to sleep better and breathe better. Also by using natural alternatives to help with his moods, which are also a part of ADHD he doesn't tend to have as many negative nights either.

Hello! My son has ADHD and he wets the bed. I'm having a time with him!
some times my sis wets the bed to are you sure ur not lactosintolerent?? my sister is and thats why she wets the bed...
I had the same problem with bed-wetting, which was extremely embarassing, to say the least!
I'm 29, and was recently diagnosed with ADHD. My mom and sisters were diagnosed years ago, and while I've suspected it, its only been recently that I've decided to do something about it.
However, I was also sexuallly abused, which has also been linked with bedwetting. I was a sleepwalker as well, and my mother had to install a complicated lock on the front door, after waking up, discovering the door open, and I was walking up the street in my sleep.
It's the oxalates. My daughter is ADHD and suffered from urinary issues until she correlated on her own that chocolate (high in oxalates) triggered her urinary issues. Later, she also figured out whole grain breads did the same thing (white breads, not a problem). As for sleepwalking or night terrors, it's part of the whole hypoglycemic thing that relates to ADHD. Reduce highly phenolic foods for a couple of weeks (artificial dyes, apples, grapes, etc) and notice a difference. If you're very observant, you might be able to make correlations with foods that trigger incontinence and sleeping issues. Also try to give them something with protein before they go to sleep so the blood sugar doesn't plummet an hour or two after bedtime. My daughter self avoids chocolate and whole grain type breads of her own volition because of the effects it has on her. I don't even have to reinforce it. Observation will be your best friend.
Okay. I have ADHD and I have never experinced any problems with bedwetting as I was a kid. Sometimes bedwetting is caused by nightmares or drinking too much before he/ she goes to bed. Bedwetting exist in praticaly all children. Would you like to exclude the theory that only 65% of the world has ADHD and replace that with 98%? Because thats exactly what your saying!
