how does pophyria affect you?

Question:

Answers:
Porphyria (check spelling) is a group of inherited disorders that involve an increased production of substances called porphyrins. The two main classifications of porphria are erythropoietic porphyria: large amounts of porphyrins in the blood-forming tissue on the bone marrow, and hepatic porphyria: large amounts of porphyrins porduced in the liver. Common symptoms are photosensitivity, abdominal pain and neuropathies. Porphyrins are iron- or magnesium-free pyrrole derivatives found in several plant and animal tissues. And pyrroles are a 5-membered heterocyclic aromatic substance that occurs naturally in many compounds in the body. Sorry for the technical jargon.

The symptoms of porphyria fall into two major groups. Some patients have attacks in which the nerves of the body do not function properly. Abdominal pain and weakness result. Other patients have problems with the parts of the skin that are exposed to the sun and can cause pain and swelling of the skin or the formation of blisters. Treatment is available for both types of symptoms.

The disease can appear in childhood, but the onset most frequently occurs between the ages of 20 and 40. The disease affects men less often than women.
