what do they do if your bleeding internally?

Question:
one of my friends is in the hospital b/c of it, i want to know what they do to test it and how they fix it,

or what else does it mean if someone is throwing up blood?

Answers:
Well there are lots of types of internal bleeds depending on location. I am assuming your friend has a Upper GI bleed. If someone is vomiting blood (hematemesis) it usually comes from either the esophagus or stomach. Either sources can give bright red blood. Is your friend an alcoholic? Alcoholics tend to get what doctors call Mallory Weiss tears from vomiting too much. These tears are generally located at the Lower Esophageal Sphincter where the esophagus joins with the stomach.

It could also be a stomach ulcer. Stomach ulcers can result from taking too many NSAIDs (like aspirin and ibuprofen), having H. Pylori infection, stomach cancer, head trauma, severe bodily burns or genetic influences such as increase acid secretion or decreased Prostacyclin production.

If this person has any liver problems due to Hepatitis, chronic alcoholism, etc. This can also cause rupture of the veins in the esophagus. Liver problems causes a back of venous blood, which then try to bypass the liver by going through the veins of the esophagus, causing them to enlarger and thin out. This puts a person at risk for esophageal venous rupture.

An endoscopy (a small camera is run down your esophagus into your stomach) is usually performed to locate the bleed and the bleed can either be sutured or cauterized. After the surgery, a hemoccult test can be performed to check for bleeds that are not apparent. This is simply done by smearing some feces on a little card which changes color if blood is present.

Um, don't ask us, ask your friend or your friends doctor. they could have boken several blood vessels or something
or they have a really bad problem

make you swallow paper towels to soak it up OMG it is horrible. they make you eat band-aids and gauze.

Remove blood from cavities, identify the source of the bleeding and tie it off, cauterize it, or otherwise stop it. Keep fluids up, observe, and wait.
