There's not too much that can be done - makeup (cover-up or "base") can hide the redness, but because you say you have scabs as well, the makeup is going to look obvious over the scabs. Just use your prescribed ointment or use Carmex lotion and hope that it goes away soon. Sorry!

Cold sores need a week or so to disappear. The best thing is a green based makeup stick which will eliminate the redness and make the lesions barely visible. Unfortunately, most "healing" creams don't work. Save your money for the green stick. Good luck!
