What is the likelihood that 4 nodules on a person's lung are cancerous?

Question:
My father had one spot (nodule) on his lungs about 6 months ago; 3 spots about 3 months ago and now has 4. All the nodules are on one lung. He is going in for a biopsy and I was wondering what the likelihood is that the nodules are cancerous. He is a smoker (or was until about 6 months ago when he had a stroke).

Answers:
well he is requiring a biopsy because he is high risk for lung cancer. there are some characteristics on the CT which may ay times give you some sense of the probability of malignancy. Appearance of multiple nodules over a short period of time, in my opinion, usually denotes a slow growing infection such as fungal or TB or malignancy. It is impossible to estimate the probability from the information you have given here.

I hope for yoursake as well as his it's not but it doesn't sound good but these days they can do a lot .so keep the faith and all will be ok..good luck will keep you in our prayers

If you are going to worrry, why pray? If you are going to pray, why worry? PRAY. I think the important thing is that your father has obviously done exactly what the doctors have told him in regards to follow up x-rays or CT or MRI; whatever he is having done. I do medical transcription and here this day after day after day. While I have no idea what the "odds" are, I know that nodules are often noncancerous, but even if they are, there are treatment options these days, especially with his close followup, and I think it will be fine. I'll pray for you, your dad and your family. Actually my s/o just went through this and was fine. He started smoking again right away and this tears my heart out. I hope you father will continue to be a nonsmoker regardless of the test results! Good luck. God Bless. Know that your father is in God's hands. Approx. 1yr ago I was dx with 2 thyroid, 1 sinus and 1 chest nodule and after the biopsy. I was told that they were all non-cancerous. I will continue to keep my eyes open, but no one can guarantee either way. Keep positive and look to your higher power. I still have faith that we can conquer anything with faith.

My mother was just diagnosed with a nodule on her lung and one on her adrenal gland, her nodules are adenomas and are not cancerous. Your father needs to go to a specialist or a good medical center. My mom goes to MD Anderson in Houston and they are wonderful. I pray for the best for your father.

I don't think there are statistics for likelihood of this type. However, seems like biopsies should have been done after the discover 3 mths ago, if not 6 mths ago. Hope all goes well.
