What can I do with a child who is vomitting even the medicine?

Question:
My child (4 years) has a sore throat, high fever and is vomitting a lot even after giving her a suppository to stop her vomitting. She can't even keep the antibiotics she has been given down. What should I do? She looks a little better than she was yesterday, though.

Answers:
if your child is on anti-biotics, im assuming that you have brought her to a doctor already. how many days has she she had the fever? you mentioned that she looks a little better now. does the fever go away once in a while, compared to a couple of days ago when it was very persistent?

give your child a soft diet. usually, when a child is sick i cook them noodles, and put a little rice in it. do not give them too much to eat.. just enough to put some food in the stomach. if she ate some and says she doesn't want to eat the rest, don't force her to finish it. you see what happens is, whenenver we're sick, our digestive system slows down. we use a lot of energy digesting food, and when we're sick, our body is trying to conserve the energy to fight off the infection. we don't want your child to go hungry, but we don't want her to feel full all the time. and that's probably how she vomits the medicine, because i am guessing that the directions said to take the medicine after the meal because anti-biotics are very potent.

if yes, let her eat a little bit and wait for about 30 minutes before giving her the medicine. ask her if she's too full to take the medicine, if yes, wait a couple of more minutes.

this is also based on my experience. i had the flu a couple of weeks ago, but i had a high tolerance for pain or illness. so i would still eat anything heavy, but my body rejects it. it's as if it's trying to say "i don't want to digest anything heavy right now, im trying to fight something off"

another thing that's probably causing her to vomit the medicine is because she doesn't like the taste. if taking the medicine, she can take a sip of water to bring the medicine down, but don't let her drink a lot, because she might vomit it again. just a sip is fine, and give her a little incentive. like a sugarfree candy that she can eat after taking the medicine. but you said that she has a sore throat, we don't want her to eat anything sweet because bacteria loves sweet. so try sugarless. taking a sip of water is only when she's taking the medicine. if she was able to hold it after an hour or so, try encouraging her to drink water, because another thing that we might worry about when a child is sick is dehydration (that's usually the main reason why some sick people get admitted to the hospital). so try to let her stay hydrated when she feels fine. my auntie is a doctor, and whenever her daughter gets sick, she lets her drink gatorade to replenish any electrolytes that she lost and keeps her hydrated. also important is bed rest.

i hope this has been helpful. i was ill all the time when i was a child. noodles and a little rice has always made me feel better. (and some hugs and kisses too) :-)

one last thing. if your gut feeling is telling you to bring your child to the hospital, listen to your gut feeling, never ignore it. what i wrote above is merely a suggestion for a child on her way to recovery. but if she's getting worse, you have to bring her in.

Take her to the emergency room. She may need to be admitted to hospital for intravenous feeding.

call her dr now! or call the emergency room dr, they can help/

go to the doctor

my dad used to do this with me take some flour mix it with a little bit of water so that it can be made into a ball but not that it is saturated then feed it to her no idea why it woks but it does hope it works out hey give her pedia light, and my favorite thowup cocktail. Bannas and oj. When she tosses it back up it will taste good. The pedia light will give her electroytes so she wont die and the bannas will give her posassium so her heart doesnt stop. The Oj has vita C necesary for fighitng off bacteria. Make sure she is hydrated and get her some supository antibiotics if she doesnt stop puking.

Well, I am the mother of 3 boys and I have had similar problems. If she has had something to drink (and kept it down) within the past 24 hours then, you shouldn't take her to the er, they won't do much of anything right now. If she shows any signs of dehydration, take her immediately, though. Make sure that its not the anitbiotic making her sick. Don't worry about getting that down her right now anyway. Start her on clear liquids only an ounce or 2 every 15 minutes. Work her up from there. Once she can keep down bland foods like crackers or bananas you can then try giving her the medicine. Hope I have helped a little.

it would be better if u take her to the doctor.

LET HER SIP GINGER ALE..one or two sips..then wait 15 or 20 min.if it stays down.give a bit more. (Stir it up first so it isnt fizzy)
My mom always did this and when I was a kid i remember being so sick once I couldnt even drink water to take medicine.but ginger ale helped. I always used this with my own children too..and it always helped

Ginger is a good anti-nauseant.even though ginger ale only has a small amount it often seems to help. I had a friend who was married to an Asian guy and she learned that you can also make ginger tea which is even stronger..but I tried that once and it tasted gross.Id stick with the ginger ale
