Are diabetes genetic?

Question:
I am a male and all of the male members of my family don't have diabetes, but almost all the females do, so I wanted to know what are the chances that I will get diabetes.

Answers:
You do have a greater risk of developing the disease than those who have no blood relatives with the disease. Yes, there is a genetic component to Type Two diabetes. You may be able to help reduce your risk by consuming a healthy diet. Most experts believe that an overweight person is at increased risk of developing the disease, so you might be well advised to keep that under control, too.

Other Answers:
YES.

Do your parents have it? Yes, it is hereditary, and then there is your nutritional factor as well.if you're worried, see your doctor. Don't fool around with it. There are serious complications from it. My ex has it, his mom and dad had it, and so did his maternal grandmother. Good Luck. Yes diabetes is genetic. However, it doesn't necessarily mean you will have it. It just means your chances of getting it are higher. The same goes for somebody that has no diabetes history in their family, they can still get it.

Absolutely, your diet has a factor on whether it manifests in you or not. It can be controlled with healthy living.

IN MY FAMILY IT IS SO EVEN THOUGH I DONT HAVE IT I'LL PROBALLY HAVE IT WHEN IM OLDER

Start watching what you eat now. Lower your sugar intake and get plenty of exercise. You still might get it but there is a chance that if you take care of yourself now you might not get it Diabetes does not care if you are male or felmale..iIf you think you may have Diabetes do not hesitate to see your doctor as there are many complications that can result from having this disease. It is hereditary, but you can also get it by taking medicines such as steroids which elevates your sugar levels. Take care of yourself, don't wait, you may have it but you may be able to control it with pills rather than insulin if its in the early stages. Good luck and good health to you.

You still have a good chance of getting diabetes. Yes it can be hereditary. Even if you have hpoglycemia which is low blood sugar, this can turn into hyperglycemia which is high blood sugar (diabetes). Watch your diet, exercise, and get your blood tested regularly by a physician to keep a check on this since it does run in your family.

Yes but it didnt show up in me until I turned 40. It runs in my entire famliy Yes diabetes is genetic, but it also depends on other factors too like if you are overweight or have high blood pressure if eat healthy.

Genetics predispose a person to diabetes.Environment precipitates it.

yessssssssssssss

type 1 is but type 2 is not Yes, I unfortunately didn't know we had family history when I was diagnosed. It runs very strong in my dad's family, and he wasn't speaking to them at that time. Later we learned that both of my dad's siblings are type II, and about half of his cousin's. I am one of five children, and three of us are diabetic. My kids have a 50:50 chance of developing it. Yes, diabetes can be genetic.
