Hypothyroid or normal?
Question:

Dear SusanD:
Thyroid evaluation is more that just merely checking on the levels of thyroxine, that can be on the normal side,
Before determining how your thyroid is working, its necessary to check yout triyodotironine resine captation test (T3), Tirostimulant hormoneTSH (normal range 1-5 ng) and thyroid scan with technecium T99.( 2-3 milicuries given in 5 ml saline IV 15 minutes to 30 before the test in the nuclear Med dept of your Hospital)
After we have all those, then we chack other causes (non thyroid)for your symptoms. Not only the thyroid is to be blamed for tiredness, slow growth of hair and nails, brittle nails, daytime fatigue, excess sleepiness during the day, depression in extreme cases, morning puffiness of the face, weight gain despite not being on diet.....
now tell me....( it is not clear to me),,,,which symptoms are getting worse?...do they check with what you feel?....maybe your thyroid is not the culprit..
Please let me klnow.
Yours sincerely

Get a second opinion and retest. you may need sythroid.
To get a true reading on your thyroid level these labs need to be done:
TSH
Free T3
Free T4
Sometimes your TSH (the test your doctors did) will come back "normal" but the other two test will show other factors that will determine if you need meds to control your thyroid. My TSH was always normal, but my T3/T4 tests were low.
Good Luck
My suggestion would be to see another doctor. I had suspected for several years that I had a thyroid problem and within the last year I have developed hypothyroidism along with two nodules on the thyroid. I just was very persistent until I found a doctor who would take the time to listen to me. Good luck!
