Needle Sticks?
Question:
Answers:
Might want to check the patient's blood work . . . and ask if they would be willing to have their blood drawn for HIV/Hep.
HIV and Hepatitis for sure
The health care worker should have an HIV ELISA, hepatitis B panel, and hepatitis C antibody drawn. Occasionally we also draw liver function tests. Mostly, the worker has these drawn to prove that at baseline they were ok, in case they later contract disease. More importantly, you need to get an HIV rapid test and hepatitis serologies done ASAP on the pt whose needle you were stuck with, as if the patient is HIV+, the longer you wait to start therapy the higher your risks of getting HIV from the stick are.
HIV, Hepatitis B,C.followed by anti-viral drugs for up to 6 months. I was stuck by a needle at work and luckily the person agreed to get tested for the HIV, Hep B and C so I only had to take the meds until the blood work came back negative. The meds are nasty, made me really sick. Good Luck
