Hello, If you want to lose half of your weight, you have to see a Dietitian. You couldn't do it on your own and it would be dangerous with your Diabetes. Good Luck!
Since you are overweight and have health issues the best advice is to see a specialist. You should see a dietitians most insurance will pay for it and if not it cost around 50 bucks. You go tell them what you like to eat and they tell you portions and give you a diet appropriate for your health and well being really works. Good luck I tried every diet on earth! Until I saw a dietitian I never lost weight and kept it off. I have lost the weight and keep it off by changing the way I eat and what I eat and I gave up nothing and never get hungry. When i overindulge have that slip my scale tells me I gained I get back in line with my diet. So happy and healthier it is so worth it.
Hi, Just want to say in case you're not aware that losing the weight may possibly make the diabetes go away depending on your situation. I'm no medical expert but here is my advice:
1. Avoid all white flour. In order to do this you must read ingredient labels of everything you eat. White flour is the same as sugar to diabetics and dieters.
2. Lots of salads and vegetables
3. Eat nothing white-no potatoes, no rice, and again NO white flour. Must be whole wheat or whole grain.
4. Celery, fried in butter,yum., fresh with peanut butter or the low fat cream cheese.
5. Try half of the portion sizes than you're used to and drink LOTS of water
6. Eat nothing after dinner.
7. Walk or exercise at least 30-60 minutes a day. Walking is free. Remember to stop and smell the flowers.
8. If you need an inexpensive source of protein without a lot of carbs used dried beans sold in bags at grocery stores. Soak them overnight in water. You can make refried beans, soups with lots of vegetables, pea soups...................

Hello, I too have been recently inflicted with diabetes and high cholesterol I changed my diet significantly, and lost 15lbs and have kept it off i was not that much over weight but returned to my goal weight in relitvely fast time, I too am on a limited income social security- reduced if not all togeather all white processed wheat products, white bread, sweets, potatoes, etc, eat more often but smaller portions, walk each morning and evenning preferably after you eat drink lots of water Beans are a great and affordable protein source and much better than meats if you must eat meat do not eat red meats stick to fish and chicken vegtables and fresh fruits- its the carbs that turn into sugar that are bad and worse the sugar in fresh fruit digests differently in your body after doing this diet for 6 weeks my cholestrol and diabetes/ sugar levels have return to normal for the most part good luck also check out the national diabetes assoc web site or just type in diabetic diet in your web browser you will find a wealth of information good luck
try just eating a balanced diet of normal-sized portions. you don't have to eat expensive stuff to lose weight or to follow diabetic guidelines. Portion control is probably your most important thing to try doing. Also, be sure you are on the proper dosage of thyroid medication. ask your doctor for coupons or samples of your med if that will help you financially.

For type I and type II diabetics.
I've found a wonderful book that will help you control your diabetes and minimize or even eliminate the complications. Some folks who became diabetic due to poor diet and obesity are effectively cured by following the advice in this book. I'm a hereditary type II, which makes it more difficult, but it helps all types, especially those who became diabetic due to poor eating habits. It's by an author who has really done his homework, Patrick Quillin, Phd. I have tried his suggestions and found them to be very helpful. I have no complications whatsoever and my blood sugar levels are quite stable. Yes, I still have to take Metformin (Glucophage) daily, but it's the minimum dosage (500mg) and I only have to take it twice a day. I have been off Metformin for as much as a week, but this was with vigorous exercise. Many non-hereditary type IIs have gotten off medication completely, just with diet, exercise, and supplements. So, in some instances, it most certainly can be 'effectively' cured.
The book explains what's going on in our system and what to do about it. It's really easy and inexpensive. It's basically diet, supplements and exercise.
