My son has a leaky aortic valve, and MAY need a replacement sometime in the next few years?
Question:
Answers:
After my ex-husband had an aortic valve replacement, due to a birth defect, he was able to be more physically active than ever in his life. You understand that this doesn't necessarily mean that your son will have the same outcome, only that it MAY be a possibility.
Your greatest concern should be whether he will need to take the drug Warfarin (Coumidin), or some other powerful blood thinner. People taking these drugs definitely must avoid contact sports and many other activities, as well as have frequent blood tests.

Don't you think it would be better to ask a qualified heart surgeon this question, than a bunch of dumba*sses on Yahoo??
But then you're probably looking for a feel good answer than a realistic one!!
best thing to do is ask ur doctor hes the one that can really answer ur question !! sorry that ur son isnt doing good,as a mom i no what ur going threw! ill do a prayer for him and i hope it goes well!! good luck mom!!
I had an aortic valve transplant in 1996 and I can do anything I could do before the transplant. I think a lot of his ability to remain active has to do with what type of replacement valve is used. I have a cadaver valve and take no anti-rejection medications. The only thing that was stressed to me is the use of prophalactic antibiotics before dental work is performed. I wish your son well.

Personal experience. Transplant survivor 1996.
With a valve replacement, he will probably be on anticoagulants. Sports are out. Try to start him on intellectual pursuits.
If they put in a mechanical heart valve, which is likely in view of his age, he will be on anticoagulants
Contact sports are pretty much out, if he is
If they put in a bioprosthetic one (not mechanical) he won't be on them and it should be fine to do most things.
Either way,he can still play, go on a roller coaster and play baseball
Football might be dangerous, might..
