posion ivy?

Question: Is it safe to work with very young children (around 8 months old) when you have posion ivy? I work in a church nusery and I know you can't catch posion ivy, but I am just trying to be safe and sure. I have had the rash for almost two weeks now. I have obviously bathed many, many times. I have been putting calamine lotion on in order to help with the itch and that has helped a lot.

You can work around the children. Your rash is a reaction to your exposure to the plant, not a contagious condition. If you have open sores from the rash, then be careful to cover them. Other than that, you have no reason to be concerned.

If the blisters are leaking that clear yellow stuff, you can spread it to the baby...if you're unsure, you should see your doc to see if it's at the stage where it's ok. Better to be safe than sorry.

As long as you have thoroughly cleansed the area, you will not spread the rash to anyone...as long as it is poison ivy! Since you have had it so long, I would be sure to see a doctor. Do not be around the children if your rash has open sores or blisters.

I'd say if you want it to go away faster... go get a shot from the dermatologist.
It should be safe at this point to work with little ones.
You aren't contagious if all you had was poison ivy.
If you are concerned go to the derm and double triple check.

I am a childrens pastor who had your incedent. I had it in my feet so what I did was during the week put calamadril or something like that on it. And right before service put dry clean socks on and was able to help. As long as its covered you should be fine

After two weeks you should be fine. The oils that caused your skin to react should be long gone by now.

But go to your doctor and get prednisone. Calamine lotion is very 1950's. Prednisone is a steriod (not a Barry Bonds 'roid, but a medicinal one). It will stop the itch in about a day and clear up the redness a lot faster.

2 weeks? You need to go to the dr and get a shot. And oatmeals baths just make it not itch as bad.

not to alarm you, but it's highly likely. the irritant that's making you itch (and prompting you to douse it in calamine) is actually a tacky oil which is easily transferable to skin, your pets, your clothes, and anything else it comes in contact with.

hopefully, two weeks will diminish the possibility of transference. here's hoping things will work out here and no one will catch this off of you, but please do take care.
