why a person who is a chronic drinker needs to progressively drink more to get the same high feeling.?
Question:
Answers:
when the body is constantly exposed to any drug, it becomes in a sense "immune" to it. The body becomes resistant to the drug and the more drinking a person does, the more they need to nrink in order to get to the point where the body can no longer be resistant to it. It's pretty much like that with most drugs, even simple things like advil
Other Answers:
Because their body gets used to it and it takes more to reach that high. It's the same with anything. My grandmother progressed up to taking 6 Tylenol for a headache...but she was a pillpopper, anyway!
alchol intolerence/immunity
Because the body develops a tolerance for alcohol. People that drink often usually handle booze better than those who drink infrequently. It's like "upping the ante"...a little more alcohol is required after the body has developed a tolerance to it.
The alcoholic builds up a tolerance to the alcohol. So he/she needs to drink more to obtain the same feeling.
This is what in Pharmacology is called "Tolerance" which is the ability of the liver to "detoxify" the blood stream faster than the 1st time 'cause the liver is making more of the receptor that does this in this case alcohol.
This also happens with drugs and other substances
Because the enzymes in your liver that metabolize alcohol increase with heavy drinking. More enzymes get the booze out of your blood stream quicker so you need to drink more. After 10-30 years of heavy drinking, you will need to drink less and less as your liver becomes damaged. Eventually 1-2 drinks will make you drunk.
Desensitization- the body craves homeostasis(equilibrium), so gets 'used' to alcohol by accepting the current amount. The user likes the feeling of 'more' alcohol, so keeps using more and more as the body gets used to the new amount. A vicious circle.
There are quite a few different reasons that a person develops a tolerance to alcohol and it takes more to produce the same effects. It's different for everyone.
Have a look at this link, it explains it quite well.
