Why would a doctor prescribe Lisnopril if blood and urine results showed a higher than normal level of protein

Question:
No history of high blood pressure, and other than a 24 hour urine sample no other tests were done.

Answers:
ACE inhibitors like lisinopril have been shown to have a kidney protective effect that is independent of blood pressure effects (which is why they may be prescribed even if you don't have high blood pressure). They have definitely been shown to decrease/reverse the progression of proteinuria. I don't think the mechanism is known for sure. It may be related to the dilatory effect they have on the glomerular efferent arterioles.

Other Answers:
Proteinuria (protein in the urine) is a sure sign of kidney damage or kidney disease. The most common cause of this is hypertension and high blood pressure will also cause further damage to the kidneys and a lower blood pressure will help the kidneys to heel and prevent further damage. If your levels were really elevated you probably do have high blood pressure and just didn't know it. Buy a automatic blood pressure monitor and keep track of the results daily.
