info on post herpatic neuralgia?

Preteach95's response doesn't do PHN justice. Some people who have had shingles also retain PHN. It is a result of the nerve damage caused by shingles.

People really don't understand. The pain from shingles is by far the worst pain you can experience. Far worse than broken bones or abcessed teeth. If you get it bad you are just plain disabled. I had a bad case. I lost 20 pounds in 3 weeks and there was nothing really wrong with me except pain and a healing rash.

After the shingles goes away PHN lingers. The pain is strange. Light touch, like the touch of clothes on your skin or the feeling of the wind on your face, can be excruxiating. For some it goes away with time. Sometimes it flares up. I have had it for about 2 years and it has stayed about the same for that time. The pain is kept under control through a new drug called Lyraca. I used to use Neurontin but it wore off too quickly and I would quickly exceed the safe daily dosage. The Lyraca works a lot better. Sometimes other drugs are prescribed: usually narcotics or anti-depressents. I tried Cymbalta but it had no effect. I didn't try the narcotics because I didn't want to feel like a zombie and the Neurontin was working.

Even with the Lyrica the pain is always there.it is just in the background. I can really tell when it is wearing off.

Sleep is a wonderful thing. When I am well rested the pain is much more controllable.

I have heard it said that no-one ever died from shingles or PHN.except those who committed suicide because of the pain. Believe me, it is that bad. If you've got it know that it can be dealt with.if you don't fell lucky.

By the way, if anyone who reads this gets shingles, the impact can be greatly reduced if you take Valtrex within 3 days of the onset of symptoms. Don't wait, because you don't want to experience the full force of the disease.
