The Avian flu is a strand of Influenza A which is widely known for its ability to change its genetic structure. Thats why every year, biotech companies are in a hurry to develop new vaccines for influenza.
The first case of the Avian flu was recorded in Scotland in 1959 but the current strain (H5N1) appeared after 1999 mostly due mutations which occur in all influenza viruses.

Actually the virus that causes influenza (a kind of cold) in humans, come originally from the virus that affects the birds. So the virus appeared in earth as any other living creature on it; but first the virus was originally from the birds and then mutated into the one that affect us. Birds have had the virus for a loong time, but a new (and normal AND EXPECTED) mutation made the virus more deadly, until the birds get some defenses against it
