How long after amputation should one experience pain in nerve endings of stump?

Question:
its been about two years since the amputation. there are many complications but amputation is about ten inches above my knee and mistakes were made prior to the surgery but i do not know all the details. I am beginning to gather more and more information and realize there many problems. i wonder if this continued pain could be avoided. i do not see the same doctors because there are so many problems.

Answers:
Is your pain actually in the stump, or where your leg USED to be?

If it's below the amputation, then you may have what is called "phantom" pain. By now, this is likely chronic. Lyrica and gabapentin are often used to treat this type of pain.

If it's in the stump, then you may need a revision.

You need to see a doctor who does above the knee amputations. Depending on where you are, this may be a genera surgeon, an orthopedic surgeon, or a vascuar surgeon.

Good Luck

Other Answers:
It takes along time for the body to heal from such a tramatic event. Add to that the extra complications you discussed and your body is trying to deal with alot at one time. My husband had serious knee surgery after a car accident. He still has pain in the leg due to the arthritis that built up. The surgery was over 7 years ago. It is typical for a person with an amputated limb to continue having pain throughout their lifetime. For some reason the brain keeps wanting to send messages to the absent limb. And the scar tissue and arthritis also can cause pain. There really is no cure for it. Eventually the leg will heal and most of the pain will be gone. However it will never be completely gone no matter how many doctors you go to. Follow through on the exercises that the physical therapist gave you and watch your weight. Learn alternative pain reduction methods or ask the dr. for a prescription. But also be sure that the pain is not amplified by your own depression or fears.
